Hey Sr. Katy!

This is my first visit to your blog. I happened to come across it whilst researching religious life in the 21st century. I must say, I am both impressed and inspired. :)

I'm a 21-year-old Australian Catholic currently discerning a possible vocation to religious life. I'm also at university studying to be a high school teacher. I find your blog very interesting, in terms of both your vocation and career. Thank you for sharing your life with the world. :)

I love the fact that you are a Sister in your 20s - more specifically, the youngest School Sister of St. Francis in America! That's inspiring in itself. Good on you! I hope you continue to inspire other young women to explore religious life by your wonderful example.

Keep up the beautiful blogging and I'll be sure to stay tuned for future entries. :)

I read about you in The Catholic Herald. Congratulations on your vows and your blog. When I went to school there were lots of nuns, but most of them weren't fun. In fact some were downright sour. Keep up the good work. Something tells me the guy in the Herald who wrote the nasty letter about you doesn't have much fun at all. Go Pack Go!

Hi Steve-
The comment written in to the Catholic Herald made me very sad for that man. I think his energy could be a bit redirected to something of more substance than my arms! :) Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you like my blog.

Hi Sr. Katy,

I just stumbled across your blog and am thoroughly enjoying it. I'm a Sacred Heart Brother, 29 years old (for another week -- yeesh!), and like you the youngest in my community in the country. Congratulations on your vows from one "youngest" to another! The pictures from your vow ceremony looked just marvelous. Many blessings to you and your sisters!

Hi Sr. Katy!
I love your blog! I just found it a few weeks ago. I read the article and I'm so touched by it! That's so great to know that you are a School Sister of St. Francis, and One Fun Nun!
I'm just an ordinary (maybe too ordinary) girl also discerning vocation to the religious life living currently in the Aloha State.
I hope to read more of your posts soon!
God Bless you in all your works!

Sister Katy,

I love and appreciate your enthusiasm for your vocation. Do you envision you and your order wearing habits? I think that it is important for both priests and nuns to dress the part out in the world, it commands a certain respect, and I think will increase your vocations.

Dear Mark,

Thanks for your comment. Our Sisters in the United States wore habits from the late 1800s until the 1960s. The sisters in the US do not wear habits and we won't go back to wearing them.

For us, we are asked to dress simply in a way which makes sense for where and how we are ministering. We feel "being one" with people is one way to live out our call; rather than being separate.

Rather than focusing on our "exterior" and what I am wearing. I'd rather "look the part" through my actions, words, ministry, prayer, and commitment to mission.

Rest assured, my simple Tau Cross which I wear proudly as a symbol of my committed, consecrated, and commissioned life allows for many people to engage in thoughtful conversation.

I must admit; however, most of the thoughtful, enlightening, and witness type moments I've had have been very little to do with what I have worn, rather how I engage in relationships with people.

As far as increasing vocations; my hope for people is that they discern where God is calling them to be must authentically themselves. If that is in religious life...great! There are many expressions of this life. If it is somewhere else...great. We all have vocations...it's just figuring out where. I think clothes have little to do with it.
